Synaptic transmission is the process by which information is passed down the axon of a neuron (as an electrical impulse) to another. Synaptic transmission is the most basic and essential step for the normal functioning of the nervous system. A collaborative group of scientists from the Woods Hole Institute, the New York University School of Medicine, SUNY Downstate Medical Center and the University of São Paulo demonstrated that treatment with RNS60 enhanced synaptic transmission via increased ATP levels in the presynaptic terminal of the squid giant synapse, a model frequently used to study synaptic transmission. The data has important implications on how RNS60 may affect neuronal function in many pathologies where neuronal transmission is affected due to bioenergetic deficit.
